ChemLINE® 784Ethylene Dichloride (EDC)BAM-Validated

100-Day Immersion Testing of ChemLINE® 784 in Ethylene Dichloride for Resistance Performance

ChemLINE® 784 was tested for its resistance to Ethylene Dichloride (EDC, CAS 107-06-2) on behalf of a major chemical company. The 100-day in-house immersion study was independently validated by BAM, confirming the coating as the ideal choice for EDC storage and transportation.

Summary

EDC demands a coating proven for safe storage and transport.

Ethylene Dichloride (EDC) plays a crucial role in the industrial production of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM), an essential precursor in the polymerization process used to manufacture polyvinyl chloride (PVC). PVC is integral to applications including pipes, fittings, profiles, tubes, windows, doors, sidings, wire, cable, film, sheet, and flooring.

Given the importance of EDC in the production chain, the safe and efficient transportation and storage of EDC are essential, making it critical to evaluate coating systems designed to protect tanks from the chemical's potentially corrosive effects.

Test Method

A 100-day immersion study across four water concentrations.

Standard 2"×5" test panels were sprayed with ChemLINE® 784 in accordance with APC specifications, then heat-cured at 122°C for the specified duration. Once cured, panels were prepared for exposure testing in EDC solutions maintained at 40°C for the duration of the study.

Panels were periodically removed, dried in a fume hood, weighed, and visually inspected for defects. Photographic documentation was carried out at each weighing interval, with results recorded through day 100.

  • Substrate 2"×5" steel test panels
  • Coating ChemLINE® 784 — sprayed, heat-cured at 122°C
  • Test medium EDC as received
  • Test medium 2 EDC with 500 ppm water
  • Test medium 3 EDC with 1% water
  • Test medium 4 EDC with 5% water
  • Temperature 40°C, maintained for duration of test
  • Monitoring Weight change + visual inspection at intervals through day 100

Results

Minimal weight gain, no visual defects, across all conditions.

Weight gain for all ChemLINE® 784 samples exposed to EDC solutions was less than 2%, and weight gain for panels immersed in neat EDC and EDC with 500 ppm water was less than 1%. These results surpass the acceptable test threshold of less than 15% weight gain, providing strong evidence of the coating's resistance to EDC across varying water concentrations.

Visual inspections throughout the immersion period found no discoloration, blistering, cracking, or peeling. Panels retained their original gloss and appearance, further affirming the coating's durability.

  • Weight gain under 2% across all EDC test solutions
  • Weight gain under 1% in neat EDC and 500ppm water EDC
  • No discoloration, blistering, cracking, or peeling observed
  • Original gloss and appearance retained throughout

Conclusion

BAM-verified resistance, recommended with confidence.

In addition to in-house testing, third-party validation by BAM Certification Body (BZS) confirmed the suitability of ChemLINE® 784 for EDC service. The coating met the requirements of DIN 50905, ASTM G31, DIN EN ISO 12944, and DIN EN 12285, verifying its resistance up to 40°C in Ethylene Dichloride.

Based on these results, APC recommends the use of ChemLINE® 784 in EDC services with utmost confidence. Mimicking real-world conditions through a 100-day immersion test, the coating's proven resistance to EDC across varying water concentrations demonstrates ChemLINE® 784 to be the optimal choice for the safe transportation and storage of EDC.
