Deal Snapshot
A major player in the Food & Beverage Industry chooses the BPA-Free ChemLINE® Coating System for food storage
A major U.S. consumer packaged goods company needed a BPA-free, FDA-compliant lining for tomato paste storage tanks in California. ChemLINE® 784 met every regulatory requirement and was selected for the project — with the customer ultimately expanding the scope to a third tank.
The Obstacle
Strong lining integrity, but missing a critical regulatory qualification.
A major U.S.-based consumer packaged goods company needed a coating solution for two conical-bottom storage tanks used to hold tomato paste, each measuring 46 feet high by 19 feet wide. As part of the company's standard process, tanks requiring relining were placed on a routine inspection plan to confirm lining integrity.
Because the tanks were located in California and used for food storage, the replacement lining had to meet strict state and federal requirements — including FDA approval, BPA-free status, and CONEG compliance — while still delivering the chemical resistance needed to protect the substrate from the acidic nature of tomato paste.
The Regulations
Three overlapping compliance frameworks governed the lining choice.
Food contact materials in the U.S. fall under the FFDCA (Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act), administered by the FDA, with regulations on adhesives and coating components specifically addressed in 21 CFR 175.300. California Proposition 65 separately requires the state to maintain a list of chemicals known to cause cancer or reproductive harm, BPA among them, and restricts its use in certain consumer products.
CONEG compliance, originating from the Coalition of Northeastern Governors' Model Toxics in Packaging Legislation, prohibits intentional use of lead, cadmium, mercury, or hexavalent chromium in packaging components such as inks, adhesives, and pigments, and requires certificates of compliance approved by the relevant state.
- FFDCA Federal Food, Drug & Cosmetic Act — FDA-administered
- 21 CFR 175.300 Regulations on adhesives & components of coatings
- California Prop 65 Restricts chemicals linked to cancer/reproductive harm, incl. BPA
- CONEG Compliance Prohibits lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium in packaging
The Decision
ChemLINE® 784 cleared every regulatory bar and won an extra tank.
Routine inspection showed the existing lining had strong integrity but lacked BPA-free status. ChemLINE® 784 was introduced to the customer by Process Service Specialists (PSS) of Gonzales, Louisiana, an applicator experienced in lining food and beverage tanks. After review by the customer's team of chemists, the coating passed every regulatory requirement for the project.
ChemLINE® 784 is a high-functionality, two-component thermoset polymer coating formulated for an unmatched level of chemical resistance. Its high-gloss, low-energy surface also allows for high-temperature cleaning and minimizes commodity absorption into the lining, helping preserve product purity. During the application process, the customer expanded the project to a third tank suited for the 784 system.
- Achieved BPA-free and FDA-compliant status
- Passed CONEG and California Prop 65 requirements
- Supports high-temperature cleaning cycles
- Minimal commodity absorption preserves product purity
Customer Benefit
Compliant protection without compromising performance.
ChemLINE® 784 delivered the combination the customer needed: full regulatory compliance alongside the chemical resistance required for an acidic, food-grade application. The result was sufficient confidence in the system that the customer expanded the project scope mid-application, bringing the total number of lined tanks to three.
